ICONOGRAPHY OF ARMENIAN RUGS

The Armenian Rugs Society sponsored a mini-Symposium from February 22nd to the 24th, 2013 at the Alexander Rug Gallery in Laguna Beach, California, hosted by Alexander Rug Gallery owner and attorney Leon Alexander.

The two-day event showcased an exhibition of select Armenian rugs and textiles never before displayed in public, nor considered in any published articles, papers, or catalogs.

The symposium also featured presentations by Hratch Kozebeokian, on the topic of "The Iconography of Armenian Rugs," and by Lauren Arnold on the issue of "Armenian Carpets in Early Renaissance Paintings."

Art historian Lauren Arnold presenting on the subject of her ongoing research into Armenian Carpets in Early Renaissance Paintings, during the Armenian Rugs Society's exhibit in Laguna Beach.

Her online Carpet Index debuted on Flickr in 2008, and includes over 300 images of Armenian and oriental carpets in Renaissance paintings.

Miss Arnold's research for her upcoming new book has led her to several new conclusions about the nature of the carpets depicted in Italian works of art.

She has demonstrated that carpets depicted prior to 1500 are not of Muslim origin, as once assumed, but are of Eastern Christian/Armenian origin.

Rug designer, master weaver and restorer of ancient hand-woven textiles and rugs, Hratch Kozibeyokian speaks at the Armenian Rugs Society Mini Symposium about Iconography in Armenian Woven Art, in Laguna Beach, CA.

Mr. Kozibeyokian reflects on how Armenian carpets are unique "texts" composed of a language of sacred symbols reflecting the lives, beliefs, and world-view of ancient Armenians artisans.

Armenian carpet and rug weavers were able to preserve these traditions, while presenting ornament-ideograms in unlimited variations of styles and colors, thus, creating the basis for new Armenian carpets and woven arts.

Please view Mr. Kozibeyokoan's presentation, at the left for a compelling view of Armenian arts.
