OUR STORY...

The Armenian Rugs Society, is a non-profit organization founded in Washington D.C., in 1980, dedicated to the identification, preservation, documentation, and dissemination of knowledge pertaining to the cultural contributions made by Armenian weavers and craftspeople to the rich and vibrant history of textile arts.

In the interest of preserving historically important Armenian rugs and textiles, the Society offers support of various types to museums and institutes in Armenia and throughout the world.

Since its founding in 1980, the Armenian Rugs Society has sponsored countless exhibits, workshops, symposia, and lectures, both in public and private venues, universities and colleges, art galleries and museums, for the general public and specialized collectors. The Society has also been able to facilitate its own workshops and other programs in public and private schools and has worked with libraries and institutes on the presentation of artifacts and historical background for a slew of textile related projects.

The Armenian Rugs Society continues to organize, sponsor, and participate in symposia and exhibits concerning rugs, textiles, and the woven arts, particularly bringing its resources to bear in the areas of the Armenian woven arts tradition.

The Society has been sponsoring and participating in exhibits, both nationally and internationally, since its inception with the aim to showcase the beauty, craftsmanship, and historical significance of Armenian rugs, carpets, and woven culture, in general, including textile production, as well as disseminate knowledge of the rich Armenian rug, carpet, and woven arts tradition.

Exhibits, also, allow both the public and collectors, as well as scholars and experts well versed in the technical and historic aspects of the rugs, to interact with the often rare and stunning pieces on display and with all those individuals sharing a deep interest in the Armenian woven arts.

Organizing, sponsoring, and participating in symposia have also been part and parcel of the Armenian Rugs Society's mission to share scholarly information, from a variety of sources, about Armenian woven arts culture. Symposia have run the gamut from interpreting woven arts iconography and ornamentation to weaving arts traditions as they have evolved in Armenian locales throughout the centuries.

In each and every case, the Society seeks to provide its membership, and the community at large, with the most accurate, incisive, and current information and findings regarding what is a global cultural tradition rich with discoveries and artifacts that, even now, creates new scholarly standards and opens new areas of study both within the Armenian woven arts arena and historical scholarship in general.

The Armenian woven arts tradition spans millennia and extends over a vast geographic territory that includes Western Armenia, the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh), Javakhk, Nakhichevan and other historic Armenian regions, as well as diasporan Armenian communities.

The Armenian Rugs Society is ever dedicated to represent, support, and preserve Armenian woven arts, as well as buttress the activities of its artisans, scholars, and people around the globe.
